Introduction

Bupleurum Root is the dried root of Bupleurum chinense DC. or Bupleurum scorzonerifolium Willd. (family Apiaceae). The root is cylindrical or conical, often curved or branched, measuring 6-15 cm in length and 0.3-0.8 cm in diameter. The surface is brown or dark brown, with longitudinal wrinkles, lenticels, and fine rootlet scars. The crown is often enlarged, bearing remnants of several stem bases and fibrous leaf bases. The texture is hard and brittle, easily broken. The fracture is fibrous and slivery, showing a pale brown bark, a yellowish-white wood, and distinct radial striations along with a prominent cambium ring. It has a faint, aromatic odor and a slightly bitter taste.
